2020 Mini John Cooper Works GP Launches Bonkers Bodywork, 302 HP in LA

It is the most powerful and fastest Mini production ever made.

The new Mini John Cooper Works GP has been seen almost everywhere. The new Mini John Cooper Works GP has reportedly lapped Nurburgring in under eight minutes. This is a remarkable feat for a front-wheel-drive hatchback of 300 horsepower. However, the prototype was covered in a strange camouflage wrap that was race track-themed. It didn’t conceal the aero add-ons which denote the new hardcore GP Model. And with the 2019 LA Auto Show pocket rocket, we can now see that it’s just as crazy as we expected.

It works just as fast or even a bit faster than we expected.MiniThe new JCW GP claims it can sprint 100km/h (62 mph), in 5.1 seconds. This should make 60 mph in just 5 seconds flat.
Honda Civic Type R. Mini can’t electronically restrain GP so keep your feet planted. The winged JCW will eventually reach 165 mph (265 km).

How does this happen? The JCW GP is the most powerful engine to be fitted to a Mini production model. The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine produces 302 horsepower (225kW) and 332 pound feet (450 Newton-meters). This latter output is available at a low 1,750 rpm. The standard JCW has a 74-hp (55-kW) increase thanks to an upgraded internal, larger intake, free flowing exhaust, and a modified turbocharger. Mini has also equipped the GP with an improved oil and cooling system to the engine so that it can withstand the demands of racing cars.

This is also why the GP bodywork was created. The Mini’s aggressive appearance is due to the GP-specific front, rear and side fascias as well as the massive roof spoiler. This increases downforce and cooling compared to the standard JCW. Because the GP’s stiffened suspension lowers the car but also widens it, the wheel arches are necessary. The chassis and engine bay are reinforced with additional reinforcement, stiffer suspension bushings, and a strutbar for the front towers. The GP comes equipped with GP-specific, four-piston front brake calipers that are 4-piston and 14.1-inch rotors. It is set up to be a true go-kart on a track.

This feat is difficult to achieve in a front-wheel-drive vehicle. Mini has an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and an integrated mechanical differential lock. This works with Dynamic Stability control, which is given a special GP mode to handle cornering understeer and oversteer. It can play a significant role in Mini’s sub-eight minute Nordschleife lap. However, Mini does not mention the Green Hell nor a lap time for the official JCW GP launch.

The GP is a special model and therefore requires the appropriate badges to be displayed both inside and outside. There are only two seats inside, with reduced sound insulation. A red bar behind them prevents cargo from crashing forward in an emergency stop. You can choose any color for your JCW GP, including a set 18-inch wheels that are only 20 pounds each. It’s fine as long as the Racing Grey metallic is with silver, red and black trim.

Mini will only build 3,000 2020 JCWGP models. Pricing starts at $44,900, as previously reported. This is a large sum but it will get you the most powerful Mini production ever. Deliveries will begin in March 2020.
