BMW X5 To Skip Facelift, Next-Gen Model Coming Summer 2018

The F15 X5 has a short shelf life.

The BMW X5 has existed on the market for almost 20 years. The SUV has seen two major facelifts in that time, one in 2006 and the latest in 2014. The German automaker will now create a completely new platform for the 2019 model year in celebration of the SUV’s 20th Anniversary.

BMWBlog states that the new BMW X5 is expected to arrive in the summer, with a market launch following in the fall. BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina will stop production of the current F15 X5 by July 2018. The new model will take its place very soon.

The current X5 will be replaced in five years. This eliminates the need for a mid-life refresh like most BMW models and makes it one of the fastest turnarounds in the range. The replacement will be completely new. Take a look at these spy photos we were able to get a sneak peak at the new SUV by taking a look at its front fascia. This includes the headlights, dual kidney grilles, and even the profile.

BMW’s modular CLAR platform will be the basis for the new X5 and other BMW cars. The SUV’s new underpinnings will make extensive use of lightweight materials. This should result in a lower curb weight. Current model weighs in at 4,680 lbs (2,122 kg).

The BMW X5 will also feature a new platform and a range new engines. Although no details have been released about the engine, the CLAR platform supports BMW’s latest range of engines. This includes everything from a plug-in hybrid four-cylinder to a biturbo V12. If produced, the M variant would likely use the same biturbo V8 of 4.4-liters found in the new BMW M5.
