Really? Yeah, really.
Update: Both individuals have confirmed that the dispute has been resolved. Cybertrucknuts.net plans to use and sell regsix7’s design. We are told that Movember will receive 10% of the profits from cybertrucknut sales. This is an organization dedicated to men’s health.
In case you didn’t know, Tesla created a pickup truck to explore Mars. Although it may be a slight exaggeration, there is no denying the controversy surrounding the Cybertruck. This madness has already reached the aftermarket with the creation of polygon truck nuts by an entrepreneur. These nuts are angular and ready for hanging from the Cybertruck’s backside as an adult-themed Minecraft creation. We discussed the website that sells these not-yet available nuts a few weeks back. But, if you believe it, it appears there is a legal dispute over who designed the design.
Motor1.com received a claim from an individual that the blue Cybertruck nuts rendering was his design. A link was included to his Thingiverse.com page. There, you will find a pair of large blue and silver polygonal cajones called Cyber Truck Nuts. They were uploaded by regsix7. He requested we not use his full name, but regsix7 went on to explain that he uploaded the design on November 25 under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives license. He stated that he had submitted a DMCA notice regarding copyright infringement to all platforms where Cybertrucknuts.net hosted content. It was a topic that is so popular, who knew nuts would be so hot?
Regsix7 granted us permission to show the design above. It looks very similar to the rendering at Cybertrucknuts.net. We reached out to the website to inquire about the matter and were redirected to [email protected], the email address that was listed as the media contact. Dayton claimed that it was a friend who had created the 3d file. All the renders and videos sent to us were from that file.
The message stated that the design similarities were “I’m certain it looks similar, but how can they be different?” The email referred to copyright claims. It stated that the sender was “under the impression” that he was jealous of the success and trying to take a piece of the pie.
A follow-up email was sent to regsix7. He specifically mentioned that the 3D CAD file of his Cyber Truck Nuts design could be downloaded at his Thingiverse Page to download for free. This allows people to have the rendering and to “freely 3D Print or CNC machine it as much as they like.” His license was not for commercial use. It also prohibited the distribution of modified versions.
Is anyone right or wrong? While we are a neutral party reporting strange news, we can tell you that cybertrucknuts.net has removed all references to the blue cybersack rendering. However, orders are still being taken and delivery of nuts is planned for 2021, to coincide with the Cybertruck’s arrival.
