One person was killed in the collision.
Winter weather can cause severe damage to motorists and, unfortunately, can even lead to death. Japan recently experienced a snowstorm that caused near-zero visibility and slippery conditions on major roads due to 60-mph winds. One person was killed in a collision of 130 vehicles.
Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture, located in the northern region on Honshu island, was hit by the storm. It is approximately 250 miles north-east of Tokyo. Although the area will receive up to 15 inches of snow by Wednesday, high winds and poor visibility on Tohoku Expressway caused the pile-up on Tuesday. The BBC stated that the speed limit had been reduced to 50 km/h (31 MPH) by weather conditions in the area, but the damage shown in the video shows that some vehicles were still moving much faster.
The good news is that most of the vehicles in the video are not damaged and were only caught in the jam. While some vehicles may have minor damage, others are clearly damaged. In addition to the one fatality, 10 others were also injured. It could have been worse, considering that approximately 200 people were directly affected.
It is a stark reminder about how fast things can change from good to bad in a very short time. Last month, a major storm in Japan left more than 1,000 people stranded on a snowbound highway in Japan for two days. Recent storms in the US have also ravaged the East Coast and southern US as far as Austin, Texas.
There are still two months of winter left in the northern hemisphere. So, stay safe.
