The final Volkswagen Phaeton has been rolled off the production line at Transparent Factory in Dresden. The last model was a black Phaeton 4MOTION with a 4.2-liter V8 that produced 335 horsepower. Although the fate of this car is still unknown, the Phaeton was introduced 14 years ago in order to boost the brand’s market share. It failed to attract consumers, and was quickly removed from the United States lineup.
The company’s Transparent Factory in Dresden has received the last Volkswagen Phaeton.
The last model was the black Phaeton 4MOTION, which featured a 4.2-liter V8 engine producing 335 horsepower. Although the fate of this car is still unknown, the Phaeton was introduced 14 years ago in order to boost the brand’s market share. It failed to attract consumers, and was quickly removed from the United States lineup.
Employees will not be happy about the decision to stop Phaeton production. Around 400 employees will be assigned to other Volkswagen Group locations or Zwickau. Although this is unfortunate, the Board of Management and General Works Council of the company are committed to continuing production at the Transparent Factory. Thomas Aehlig, Chairman of Volkswagen Dresden Works Council, stated that “the production of high-quality vehicles should resume here under the eye of customers and visitors in near future.” This is what this facility and its workforce deserve.
Volkswagen will also use the Transparent Factory as a showcase for its electromobility efforts and digitalization efforts. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the future of mobility in close quarters starting on April 8th. It will be interactive, fun, and informative. Volkswagen declined to elaborate but photos show visitors will be able to sit in a “Drivers-Assistance-Globe” and race cars on the e-Carreratrack.
