Evidently, someone broke science.
The Golden Ratio may be something you’ve heard of before, but probably not in the automobile realm. We aren’t impressed with this bit of science at the moment. We’ve seen the slideshow and we’re blown away by it. Let’s not make any more slander about the scientific community, or the CarWow folks who probably spent a lot of time on this study.
The Golden Ratio, which is basically a long-standing equation, attempts to quantify beauty. The result of applying the scientific equation to geometric shapes is what the human eye considers most pleasing. allegedly is the name we use because beauty, while intriguing, is subjective. The equation can still be used to identify shapes that have broad appeal. The math is sound on this front.
The CarWow group took the Golden Ratio, applied it to individual car shapes, and tried to determine which cars are the most beautiful and least appealing from the past 10 years. While we appreciate the effort involved in such an endeavor, we think the overwhelming majority of you will agree with us that science is simply wrong this time around.
The slideshow below features five of the most ugly and beautiful cars in recent years, as determined by the Golden Ratio. This collection doesn’t include a large-nosed BMW, or a sleek Ferrari. That’s quite telling. Science can do better.
