Mercedes’ largest and most luxurious SUV, the Mercedes GLA-Class, is getting a makeover for 2019.
It’s a bit late for the second-generation Mercedes GLS considering that it was first launched back in 2012 when it was still known as the GL. We are expecting the new full-size SUV to be completely redesigned for 2019, and without camouflage in its second half. There are still many testing to be done before the market launch.
The Nurburgring has reopened for business after spring finally arrived in Europe. Many automakers are currently in the Green Hell, where Mercedes has set-up camp to test its future models. We can see the GLS disguised as a GLS getting a drink before it hits the Nordschleife.
The current model gained weight after switching to the second generation. It should experience the same with the third generation due to its use of a more advanced platform, which might bring with it a larger vehicle. It is possible that the hotter GLS 63 will arrive very early in its life cycle, considering it has been captured multiple times on camera trying to cover the Panamericana grille found on a number of AMG models.
The styling is not very interesting at the moment. The prototype had the typical swirly camo and extra plastic bits to conceal the metal beneath. The GLS is massive and impressive. Just look at the size of the quarter-glass. The taillights may be temporary so don’t worry about them. However, the final clusters that you will see on the production model are the headlights.
The 2019 GLS could be revealed at the Beijing Motor Show on April 25, where Mercedes will show a luxurious concept. The showcar, which was teased earlier in the week, is believed to be a high-end SUV based upon the GLS. It will be launched under the Mercedes-Maybach brand.
