Ilmor Engineering is currently developing a new 700cc 5-stroke engine. It could produce 112kW (150bhp), and more than 160Nm. It is at least 5 percent less efficient than a comparable direct injection engine. Manufacturer partners are sought.
Ilmor Engineering is developing a new engine. This company was once owned by Mercedes-Benz and supplied the Germans their F1 engines. Ilmor claims the new engine is a three-cylinder turbocharged petrol, 700cc (0.7-litre), five-stroke turbocharged petrol. It is at least 5% better than a comparable direct injection engine. Despite having a multipoint injector system, this is still a very efficient engine.
Ilmor currently gets 97kW (130bhp), 165Nm (122lb-ft), of torque from it. There are new developments in cylinder capacity, valvegear design and turbo selection. These will increase power to 112kW (150bhp), and reduce weight by 20%. This prototype exhibits the performance and torque characteristics of small diesel engines, but it does not emit C02 emissions.
Steve O’Connor is Ilmor’s engineering manager. He says that this is only the beginning. He stated that there are many refinements to the concept and that they will continue to make improvements to all of the figures.
The company is looking for OEM customers to become manufacturing partners. This motor is best suited for hybrid applications. Automakers who have hybrid plans should expect a call from O’Connor and his colleagues if they haven’t received one.
