It has fins!

Auto shows showcase the latest offerings of automakers and may also show off future models. Shows host a lot of concept cars, which often show off future models with thin theatrics such as larger wheels and wild body kits. Toyota presented a unique model at this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon – the Toyota Ambient RD Prius PHV Concept. It’s quite a mouthful and doesn’t do the concept’s look justice.

The Prius collaboration is the first between Toyota Modellista (a division of Toyota) and Toyota Racing Development, Toyota’s in-house tuning company. TRD brought its knowledge of aerodynamics to the table while Modellista brought her aftermarket visual expertise to the table. The result was truly unique and eye-catching.

The concept’s design is wild, with a round nose and white, rounded nostrils that look like an Apple Magic Mouse design. The aggressive lower fascia is reminiscent of a Lamborghini leftover. The white extends into narrow arches towards the base of windshield, leaving space for what appears to be headlights. There are design elements at the bottom of the doors along the sides.

The design at the rear is even more wild. The rear features a raised spine that runs from the roof’s middle to an odd wing between stylized fins. This is something that you rarely see in modern cars. The spine runs down the back of your car to create a radical rear diffuser. The edges of both the spine and fins can be illuminated.

A hybrid Prius plug-in is hidden beneath the wild exterior with purple accents. However, don’t be surprised if the next Prius doesn’t have fins, spines, and purple accents. This concept is a collaboration between two Toyota divisions, which focuses on completely different aspects of the car. The result is, however, fascinating.
