It is expected to debut in the coming year.
The all-new Toyota Yaris is available in some markets (not America), and we’re patiently awaiting the debut the GR Yaris hot car later this week. According to a report by AutoExpress, Toyota also has plans for the revamped supermini. A Yaris-based crossover will be launched later in the year.
According to current information, the Japanese manufacturer feels there is room for its SUV line-up to expand at the smaller end. Matt Harrison, Toyota’s European Executive Vice President, stated to the publication that all segments of the SUV market are growing.
“C-HR plays at the top of what could almost be an SUV-type coupe-crossover C segment SUV. It is not able to compete with Qashqai and other practical products.
Toyota believes that customers might prefer a high-riding machine to a small hatch, but the C-HR is out of their price range. The new, unnamed Yaris model will be below the C-HR. It will compete directly with the Ford Puma and Renault Captur and Nissan Juke as a cheaper option.
“We are looking, we are evaluating, and there is an increasing number [moving from supermini hatches into small crossovers].” There could be more opportunities in the future. Harrison said that the platform was flexible enough to allow for such a feature.
AutoExpress claims that the new crossover will only be a few millimeters shorter than the Yaris. The TNGAB architecture will permit the use of electrified motors.
The new crossover is expected to be announced before the end of the year by our British colleagues. Sales are expected to begin in the first quarter or second quarter next year.
