Spied BMW M2 Electric is or isn’t a test mule for something else

Attention purists:

The new BMW M2 was captured by our spy photographers on multiple occasions. However, this car is different from all other prototypes. It appears to be a two-seater and has the body from the previous model. The rear bench is replaced with a roll cage. You will also notice a venting hood and a spoiler on the trunk lid that stands out more than any other M2 model.

The most notable difference to an M2 regular is the absence of an exhaust system. This car is clearly a test mule for electric vehicles. The quad tips that were present in the traditional M2 are gone. We are also noticing an extension in the underbody between the axles, which could indicate that the car is an electric vehicle. This is where the battery pack might be located, we assume.

Okay, now what exactly is this? One of two possibilities could be the answer. It could be that BMW is developing a fully-electric M2 or that this is just a test mule. We are not sure what it is, but we believe you won’t find a zero emission M2 with this body style. The current 2 Series is about to be replaced by a model.

It has been confirmed that the conventionally powered M2 will still be powered by an inline-six and rear-wheel drive recipe. There are plenty of spy photos of the next-gen M2 including the complete production body and all the components. This could be a test mule for another vehicle. BMW may not be planning an electric companion to the M2, but the fact that it uses this body style and size could suggest a small electric sportscar.

The 600-horsepower 2019 Vision M Next mixed concept will not be produced, but it seems that BMW is still looking to add some performance to its electrification program. This is a test mule and we don’t expect a road-going model to be available for purchase in the next two years. However, it could end up being a 2024MY electric Bimmer.

In 2021, an M Performance version will be released for the newly launched i4 with the “M50” suffix. Long-rumored X8 will get an M Performance or full fat M derivative with a plug in hybrid setup with up to 750 horsepower. But we’ll have wait and see.
