The brand will also offer an electronic delivery pallet.
CES this year was held virtually due to the coronavirus epidemic, but that hasn’t hampered announcements. Mary Barra, CEO of GM EVs, delivered today’s show’s opening keynote. Although the automaker teased two new EVs, the Cadillac Celestiq and the Bolt EUV 2022 Bolt, it also announced BrightDrop, a commercial EV brand that will begin shipping its first products in the coming year.
The BrightDrop EV600 is the bigger announcement. The van is a light commercial delivery vehicle that can deliver goods and services using all-electric power. It uses GM’s Ultium battery. GM claims that the van can travel up to 250 miles per charge, while charging at a maximum rate of 170 miles per hour using 120-kilowatt DC fastcharging. The van boasts 600 cubic feet of cargo space and is protected by a cargo area motion security device. GM offers a variety of safety equipment for the van, including automatic emergency braking and rear cross-traffic braking.
BrightDrop’s EP1 will be another product. This all-electric pallet is designed to transport cargo. The EP1 can hold approximately 23 cubic feet of cargo and has a payload capacity of 200 pounds. The EP1 was designed to deliver goods quickly, such as from the delivery van to the customer’s front door. The EP1 will have lockable cabinets and adjustable shelving organizers. GM claims it has built-in motors for electric hub motors capable of reaching speeds up to 3 miles an hour.
Both products will be made available in 2019. The EP1 will be available in 2021, while the EV600 will arrive later in the year. BrightDrop will be the first to receive the first electric delivery vans by the end the year. FedEx is BrightDrop’s first customer. The new EV commercial brand plans to make the EV600 available for order to more customers in the early 2022. BrightDrop’s van appears to be able to compete with the Ford E-Transit and the Blue Oval’s electric delivery van that travels 126 miles. This van will arrive in 2022.
