New MQB-based SUV models will follow the sedan.
Volkswagen displays the sporty Passat GT in Detroit during the North American International Auto Show. It is expected to go on sale in Q2 of this year. It will likely have a short life span, as the German automaker also announced a new Passat for the United States next year.
Volkswagen briefly stated that it is developing a new generation model for the U.S. market during its press conference in Detroit. However, no further details were provided. The sedan will receive the MQB platform from Volkswagen and most of the technological innovations found in the new Jetta as well as the Euro-spec Passat.
The 2019 Passat is part the major Transform 2025+ strategy of VW. This includes more than 50 vehicles in development and more that ten new models coming to market every year up until 2020. VW will launch at most two new models every year for the American market.
The Jetta’s new premiere will see the Arteon join the marque’s U.S. lineup in the latter part of the year. 2019 will see the introduction of the new Passat. It will be followed shortly thereafter by other MQB-based SUVs. A trademark filing suggests that VW may also bring its Amarok pickup truck to the States. This truck could be a strong competitor to the recently revealed Ford Ranger.
Volkswagen will soon be busy making the new Touareg ready for its global premiere at the Auto China Show in Beijing, April. The new SUV is being produced at Volkswagen’s Bratislava plant in Slovakia and will be available for sale worldwide before the end.
