The 2018 Subaru WRX & STI packs improved tech in a fresh-faced package

Both make the same horsepower, but these compacts are much more enjoyable to drive.

Subaru WrX and STI are two of the most important considerations when shopping for an all-weather performance vehicle that can carry a family. Subie has added sweetness to the pot by refreshing the high performance pair for the 2018 model-year. These models, which are all new-fangled, will be on display at North American International Auto Show. They look ready to race in any season, even if the engines’ output is the same.

The facelift makes them look more aggressive, particularly the more angular grille. Rally ready is also the larger intake at the front fascia. Steering-responsive LED headlights are available on all trims of STI and the WRX Limited. This allows drivers to see better the road. The new brackets for mounting roof racks are a great option for Subaru owners who love to be outdoors.

There are many quality-of-life enhancements inside. The multi-function display on the instrument panel has grown to 5.9 inches, from 4.3 inches. All models have new door pulls and improved cup holders for materials in the rear seat armrests. These photos also show the Recaro seats that are available on the Limited trim of the STI. Although it is not obvious immediately, the STI/WRX are quieter in the interior thanks to thicker doors, better seals and a foam-filled windshield head.

Performance upgrades for the STI should improve the sedan’s handling. The Driver Controlled Center Differential, for example, now uses only electronic controls instead of the old mix of mechanical actuation and electronic controls. Subaru claims that the result is faster and more responsive. Brembo’s new brakes have six-piston monoblock and two-piston calipers at the front. Both axles have drilled rotors. They are mounted on new 19-inch Yspoke wheels.

The WRX’s performance should also be improved behind the wheel. New transmission synchros will make shifting smoother, and Subaru claims that the new Performance Package adds Recaro eight way seats and upgraded brake pads.
