Auctions can be a great place to purchase extraordinary vehicles that you won’t find anywhere else. The latest RM Sotheby’s lot lives up to the hype. Although the auction house is selling a Formula 1 vehicle, it’s more than just any car. This car was piloted by Lewis Hamilton, seven-time F1 World Champion. It is estimated to be worth between $5 million and $7 millions by RM.
It is a McLaren car, the MP4-25A, and is powered by the Mercedes Benz FO 108X 2.4 liter V8 engine. According to RM the engine was a significant improvement on the previous model as it included the “F-duct”, which reduces aerodynamic drag. This allowed the car to go an additional 6 miles per hour (9.7 km per hour) on straights. It can still be race driven and is supported by original factory teams as part of each Heritage department.
Hamilton started his F1 career in Melbourne in 2007. Hamilton has competed in over 270 Grands Prix since then and led for more than 5,170 laps. His impressive racing statistics include 98 wins, 71 podium finishes and 100 pole positions. These are all in addition to his seven F1 World Champion titles. He has won the F1 World Champion title four times.
Although it’s not clear how many McLaren MP4-25A racecars are in private ownership, RM believes there is only a small number. This is not your average day that an F1 car crosses the auction block. It’s also rare for one with this much history to be up for sale. Twelve years ago Hamilton was just beginning his career as a formidable racer. Since then, Hamilton has become a legend in the sport. Hamilton’s home track, the 2021 British Grand Prix, will host the auction.
