Hyundai Veloster N – Under $30k with 275 HP

Next month, the cool hot hatchback will be available in dealerships.

Hyundai today announced pricing for its Veloster N hot-hatchback. It sounds very tempting. The South Korean-made runabout is priced at $26,900 with the N Performance Package costing an additional $2,100. The Veloster N Performance Package’s base price is $29,885. All packages come with a manual transmission, which is the only option for shifting gears.

What do you get for your dough? The Veloster N already has 250 horsepower (186 kilowatts), but the Performance Package adds 275hp (205kW) to the power. The additional cost includes the electronic-controlled limited-slip differential that allows the front-wheel-drive Veloster to handle corners with remarkable agility. Variable exhaust systems provide a pleasing popping and snorting sound, and 13.6-inch front brakes in-house help keep it all under control.

Hyundai Veloster N - Under $30k with 275 HP

This year, we had the opportunity to test drive a Veloster N at the most daunting of tracks, the Nürnbergring. The Veloster N was Hyundai’s first step into performance, and we thought it was a great car. We also enjoyed the way the car attacked the track.

How does it compare to other hot-hatchback competitors? Although we have not had the chance to compare the car on the road, it is right up there in terms of the price. A Honda Civic Si will cost you less, but it also gives up quite a lot of power. However, a Civic TypeR is more expensive and packs more than 300 horsepower. Although the standard Veloster N is about the same price as the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Hyundai still has a substantial horsepower advantage, even without the Performance Pack. The Ford Focus ST, which has 252 horsepower, is perhaps the best matchup. However, Ford is currently eliminating all other vehicles and trucks.

Dealerships will be receiving the new Veloster N in December.
