Expected to borrow parts from the NSX GT3 racing car.
Since February 2016, rumors of an upgraded Type R version the second-generation and NSX have circulated on the Internet. This is just one day after Acura opened order books in the United States to purchase the standard model. Jon Ikeda (Vice President and General Manager of Acura) in the U.S. hinted at the possibility to dial the NSX up a notch.
“I’m a car guy so I’m always faster performance vehicles… yeah, that’s what we like, we talk about it.” Ikeda said that he was cautious and added “we’ll be seeing… anything could happen.” Before revealing that the company did not have plans to build an NSX Type R, Ikeda said “There are always proposals”.
A new report from Japan claims that the hotter variant has been approved. We will see it in 2019 before it goes on sale in 2020. The standard NSX has 573 horsepower. However, the more powerful version will have 641 horsepower. It will be driven by the same dual-clutch, nine speed automatic transmission.
The biturbo V6 3.5-liter engine will likely borrow from the race-spec engine in the rear-wheel drive NSX race car. The highly anticipated NSX Type R will feature a more aggressive body, dipped with carbon fiber, and fitted with a large wing to increase downforce at its rear axle.
Honda has patented a new air dam, which is illustrated on an NSX. There have been signs that point towards a beefier version. This new juicy rumor is supported by the fact that a few prototypes were spotted at the Nurburgring last August.
Autobild last month reported about Acura’s plans for a NSX Streetster to be revealed as soon as this year. But, just like the Type R derivative we will believe it when it’s seen.
