New name, new platform and new design – everything is new.
The 120 th Paris Motor Show is a significant venue for Toyota. It’s not only the place where the Camry will be displayed as an Avensis replacement but also where the new Corolla will be showcased as the direct successor to the Auris. The five-door hatchback as well as the wagon body styles will be on display. They have completely different designs and new hardware than the Auris.
The Corollas ride on the TNGA platform and are longer than their predecessors (+40 mm hatch, 58+ mm Touring Sports). Part of this stretch can be seen in the longer wheelbases, which allow for more space inside the cabin. All versions include a multi-link rear suspension and a 10 mm drop in center of gravity. Toyota also mentions that the body shell rigidity has increased by 60% over Auris models. This allows for improved stability and handling, without compromising comfort.
Customers can choose from a 1.2-liter turbo engine or electrified 1.8 and 2.0-liter powertrains. The entry-level unit produces 114 horsepower. Next, the smaller engine with 120 hp and then the larger one with 178 HP is available. The most powerful unit offers 192 Newton-meters (142 pounds-feet) torque.
There’s so much to discuss when it comes to equipment. The Euro-spec Corolla comes with a variety of goodies, including LED headlights and wireless charging for smartphones. Toyota has many options that go beyond the basic features. There is also a JBL sound system with eight speakers and an electric tailgate.
A new sedan will join the wagon and hatchback, possibly before the end the decade.
