Volkswagen Polo R Ruled out because of low demand

The VW R Chief has spoken.

The Audi A1 through the Q8 (and most likely the Q9), there is always a performance S equivalent. This is something the German brand is known for.

But Volkswagen is not following the same path with its lineup. The company is increasing its R range with the T-Roc R being released in the early part of last year and the Touareg R making its debut last month. The electric VW ID range will also get an R version. This will be the road-going version of the highly successful ID.R electric racecar.

The most recent one is the Golf R , is already in progress and VW is pretty confident with the go faster Golf, calling it an Ultimate driving machine According to Jost Capito, VW R chief, the Golf R will be one of the smallest R Range vehicles. He said this in an interview with Auto Throttle.

He explained that the Polo wouldn’t work because of the high volume and high cost.

Volkswagen Polo R Ruled out because of low demand

A brand’s main motivation to launch a new model is demand. If VW doesn’t consider the Polo R high-demand, it won’t invest so much in its development.

Since 2014, when Volkswagen said it wouldn’t be happening, there have been many rumors about the Polo R. A 2017 report pointed out a Polo R with 300 horsepower that is allegedly in the testing phase. This gave enthusiasts some hope for a small hot-hatch.

However, Capito’s confirmation makes it seem like all hope for a Polo R is lost.
