The SUV was in trouble from the beginning.
Maserati has not had a great success with the Levante. The company had to stop production twice since its launch in 2016. However, production was cut by half shortly afterwards. Maserati sold 5,485 Levantes in 2017. Sergio Marchionne, CEO of FCA, said that the Levante was a difficult vehicle to sell.
Marchionne opened up about the Levante’s launch in an interview with motorTrend. Marchionne claims that the slow start was due to the Levante’s debut as a large luxury vehicle. “Very poor execution. The CEO stated that he felt we had failed at the Levante launch. After a poor 2016 performance and the subsequent launch in the U.S. that year, Reid Bigland was fired and replaced by Tim Kuniskis in February as global head for Alfa Romeo and Maserati.
Marchionne said that the debut of the Levante Trofeo was a “reset for market”. The new SUV has a new name and is powered by a Ferrari V8 of 590 horsepower (439 kilowatts) – the most powerful Maserati powerplant ever made – and can sprint to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.9 seconds.
The exterior of the Levante Trofeo is finished in matte Grigio Lava with 22-inch wheels, red brake calipers and a matte Grigio Lava exterior. This vehicle was launched by Maserati. The updated SUV will be produced at FCA’s Mirafiori manufacturing plant, Italy. However, it is not known if the entire Levante line will get an update.
Rumours suggest that the SUV may soon get a more powerful version. The biturbocharged, 3.8-liter V8 which powers the Quattroporte GTS could power the Levante GTS. The struggling SUV would require more than 590 horsepower, but it would be able to run on 700 hp (521kW).
