Can a GT3 RS or Turbo S beat the mighty Merc?
The world of Porsche is now focused on the upcoming 911 models that will be available for the 992-series. We forget how fast we forget the cars of the past, but this drag racing video by Cars with Pilot Tseno is a reminder of how great the 991.2 911s are.
The three-way drag race features the Porsche 911 GT3RS and 911 TurboS competing against a Mercedes AMG GT R. But it’s more than a line-em-up format. This runway is used to simulate real-world conditions and hosts six races. This is important because the 911 Turbo S is the fastest of all the cars on paper. Can it use its 580 horsepower (433 Kilowatts) properly to defend itself on an unprepped surface?
Four races are held between the candidates before you answer that question. The stats are well-known, but here’s a reminder. The 991.2 911 GT3 RS has a rev-happy 4.0 liter flat-six that produces 520 naturally aspirated hp (388 kW), whereas the AMG GT R runs a twin-turbocharged 4.0 liter V8 producing 577 hp (430 kW). Although it may seem like an unfair battle at first glance, the GT3 RS is significantly lighter and carries most of its weight over the rear tires. This gives the GT3 RS a significant traction advantage, which allows it to take a lead in every race. But is that enough to keep the Merc on the winning side?
Although we would love to make these preliminary contests more exciting for the Turbo S’s final two three-way races, neither challenger is going to be able to beat the turbo 911. The distance between second and third place in both races is approximately bus lengths. This means that the main drama of this competition is between AMG GT R and GT3 RS. Who will take the overall second-place title? Both the GT R (and the GT3 RS) win out of six races. However, one has a clear advantage.
