Three 86 models were revealed at the 86th Le Mans edition on 08.06.
Toyota prepared three special versions of its “86” Le Mans 24 Hours marathon race, the 86 sports coupe. The cars were revealed on the eighth day of the sixth months (pun intended).
“The 86 provides us with a great canvas to pay homage to some of the incredible Toyota race cars which have delighted the crowds at Le Mans,” James Clark (Toyota GB), who is responsible for the trio, and also serves as the press relations manager. “The response to our retro-liveried coupes has been amazing and we hope that these new cars, all one-off creations, will inspire the same enthusiasm as we approach the 24-hour race this year.”
This car is the first from the strictly non-production series and pays tribute to the 1992 Toyota TS010 racecar. The 3.5-liter V10 engine that was inspired by Formula 1 produced 700 horsepower (522 kilowatts). Next up is the 86, which was inspired by 1998 TS020, a pure-bred Le Mans vehicle that set records in heat competition and qualifying. It’s the same car that came so close to winning 2016 Le Mans 24 hour race.
The big, fixed rear spoilers on all three cars are inspired by the Le Mans racers’ high-downforce aero package. Toyota also gave the 86 trio a 40 millimeter lowered suspension and new aftermarket wheels. These wheels are designed to be more like the original racing wheels. The tuning package also includes a new Milltek stainless steel sports exhaust system.
Toyota does not intend to produce the special models, it is obvious.
