It is time for an update.
The Mitsubishi Outlander model is outdated. The third generation of the SUV was first introduced in the U.S. in 2014, two years after Mitsubishi joined the Renault-Nissan Alliance. It’s time for an update and it seems that Mitsubishi has started to work on this. New spy photos reveal that a camouflaged Outlander is being tested in the midwest for the first-ever time.
Although the camouflage conceals many details of the SUV’s design, it doesn’t mean we are completely ignorant about the new offering. The next generation Outlander could be on the same platform as next Nissan Rogue. This will allow for synergies. The Outlander will be larger than the current model. It should be competitive with midsize SUVs like the Hyundai Santa F. It should be based on the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer design.
The turbocharged 1.5-liter four cylinder that powers the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross could power the next Outlander. It produces 153 horsepower (114kilowatts). However, it can make more power if it is used in the Outlander. It is possible to get a plug-in hybrid version of the 2.4-liter four cylinder. The Engelberg Tourer concept could be used again by the 2021 Outlander, this time with the twin-motor design. According to the company, the concept can provide 43 miles of range using electricity alone.
The next-generation Outlander will no doubt borrow heavily from the Engelberg Tourer concept. Although camouflage hides most of the details well, you can still see similarities between the prototype and the concept. They share almost identical lighting elements front and back. The two also have a very straight and tall nose. The new Mitsubishi Outlander will be unveiled at either the Geneva Motor Show (or the New York Auto Show) next spring. It will be available for purchase in fall 2020.
