Plug-in hybrid power and all-wheel drive are also possible.
Tata Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover is making big plans for the new decade. Apart from the all-new Range Rover and XJ, there are several models in the pipeline. One of these will be the large and powerful J-Pace SUV, which was indirectly confirmed by World Car Awards jury over a year ago. The other is the long-rumored Road Rover. It’s sort of like a rugged, jacked-up wagon.
What Car, a British publication, has recently covered all these models as well as the next-generation Range Rover Sport or Jaguar F-Type. They claim to know about a new model, the baby Defender.
The entry-level SUV Land Rover claims to be destined for 2022. It is expected to be considerably cheaper. What Car states that the Defender will start at PS42,920 in UK, while its younger brother will start at around PS25,000.
The exterior styling of the Defender full-size SUV will look the same, but the interior will be very different. Land Rover is developing a stripped-back interior to achieve a competitive starting price while still making a profit.
The smaller vehicle will result in a smaller cabin. What Car’s rendering shows an efficient five-door layout.
The tiny Defender will feature JLR’s 3-cylinder 1.5-liter gasoline engine. This engine is already used in larger models. At launch, the three-pot engine will power the front wheels. Future versions of the vehicle will feature a plug-in hybrid setup as well as all-wheel drive.
The name of the vehicle is still unknown, but the report states that it will be given a new moniker. If 2022 launches are accurate, spy photos of prototypes in testing will be available starting next year.
