Hyundai Says Pickup Must Be Made in North America

Over four years ago, the South Korean automaker teased a Santa Cruz pickup truck idea.

Hyundai teased the Santa Cruz pickup-truck concept four years ago at Detroit Auto Show 2015. Despite having green-lit production twice, a production version of the truck has not yet been produced. According to Michael O’Brien (vice president of product, corporate, and digital planning), production will most likely begin in the U.S.

O’Brien stated in an interview with Automotive News that the truck would have to be made in North America. O’Brien also noted that Trump’s fury at automakers producing vehicles in Mexico was reflected in O’Brien’s interview.

O’Brien spoke out candidly about the truck’s production but the company has not yet said when customers can expect the new vehicle. More information about the Truck It is also rare to find the actual design details. However, we know that it will not look like the 2015 concept (below), which used Hyundai’s old design language. It will most likely ride on the same platform that the next-generation Tucson compact crossover Compete against vehicles like the Honda Ridgeline

From concept to production, it’s been a long journey for Hyundai’s truck. In 2015, Hyundai’s Santa Cruz pickup truck design was a hit. O’Brien claims that this is still true today. Four years later, we still wait for the production version. The automaker approved production of the Santa Cruz at the end 2016 and aimed to begin production in 2018. The truck was put on hold by a change in CEO, and the company reopened the project in 2017. We seem closer than ever to a Hyundai pickup truck.
