The next S-Class will have a swanky steering wheel.

Mercedes has launched its teaser campaign for the EClass Coupe and EClass Convertible, ahead of a double debut on May 27. We can see the interior of the E-Class Coupe and Convertible with the MBUX infotainment systems replacing the COMAND system in this episode. The dual-screen layout is still in use. The lower versions have a pair 10.25-inch screens, while the more expensive models get a 12.3 inch arrangement for the infotainment and driver’s displays.

The steering wheel will be the most visible change in the cabin. The four-spoke wheel was introduced earlier this year in the E-Class sedan, wagon facelift and will be available in the next S-Class. spy photos have shown. Mercedes will offer the wheel in three versions for the E-Class: leather, wood, leather and supersport.
The spokes are glossy black and have touch controls that switch from optical to capacitive sensor to control them. While the rim has capacitive sensors built in to detect if the driver is at the wheel, the rim also features capacitive sensors. Mercedes explains that the semi-autonomous driving systems work in conjunction with these sensors. The pre-facelift model required that the driver move the steering wheel to allow the assistance systems to “know” the driver is still in control. However, on the new model, the driver will only need to touch the rim.

The emergency brake will activate if the sensors on the rim fail to detect the driver’s hand for a period of time. The 2021 EClass has active safety systems, including brake assist, stop-and-go, steering aid, and active blind spot assistance with exit warning. Automatic parking is available on designated areas in addition to the existing support for parallel and end-on parking spaces.

The Mercedes’ most advanced infotainment system, will be available with support for augmented technology for navigation. This should make it nearly impossible for drivers to miss a turn. Details like arrows or house numbers are added directly to the MBUX’s display. Traffic light guidance is also available, where infrastructure permits.

There are still one week before the debut of the 2021 E-Class Coupe or Convertible. Expect more teasers to come in the days ahead.
