The R-Line model poses also for the camera.
The Skoda Octavia 4 Combi was Europe’s most-seller wagon. Now, the Volkswagen Group has released an updated version. The mid-cycle update to the Tiguan goes beyond a facelift. It also introduces the eHybrid, and R.
VW released videos to show off the performance and electrified derivatives. The R-Line specification also features the Tiguan regular. We would choose the R full-fat model over the others, but both models have plenty to offer.
The Tiguan’s Golf-esque design is a great fit. It’s not the most exciting compact crossover but it’s a huge commercial success. The VW Group’s most popular model with approximately 911,000 units in 2019, so it was imperative that the facelift not alter an already lucrative recipe.
The revamped Tiguan features a variety of high-tech gadgets, including the matrix LED headlights and the 2021 Arteon touch climate controls. The Group’s new MIB3 infotainment system has 10 times the computing power than the older setup.
VW will also be updating the Tiguan with a comprehensive facelift. The new Harman Kardon sound system, 480-watts, and a fancy steering wheel with touch controls are included. VW claims that the latest TDIs, which are the most efficient gasoline- and diesel engines in the industry, will be hidden beneath the new skin.
For enthusiasts, the most significant novelty is the Tiguan R’s turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. It generates 310 pound-feet (420 Newton meters) and is shared with the Arteon R and the Golf R. It is equipped with a dual-clutch seven speed automatic transmission and a 4Motion system that benefits from selective wheel torque for improved handling and grip.
The Tiguan R may be available in the United States, but the eHybrid will not. The plug-in hybrid, which uses an electrified configuration from the versions the Golf, Passat and Arteon, has a 31-mile range and can reach 81 mph (130 km/h), without using gasoline.
The European Tiguan revision will be available for purchase this fall. The longer Allspace is likely to follow shortly.
