Although the official unveiling of the new 2020 Land Rover Defender is still weeks away, a handful publications were permitted to take the SUV off-road. Although the official specs are not yet available, Andy Deeks from Land Rover’s product engineering group for durability and reliability did reveal some details that should please Defender fans who were concerned the new SUV would be too soft to handle the iconic off-road nameplate.
There will be two types of suspension for the Defender: air and coil. While the air suspension is more powerful, Deeks in claims that the coil suspension is far more capable than the other. To protect the vehicle, the air suspension has a temperature monitor built into the dampers. However, this is not the only suspension upgrade. Land Rover added reinforced subframes to the suspension and other stronger parts. Deeks stated that Land Rover designed Defender to surpass company’s normal capability targets according to Autocar.
The D7U aluminum monocoque architecture of Land Rover is the foundation of the new Defender. This platform was also used for the Land Rover Discovery. However, the numbers do not correspond to wheelbase length. A 130 model is also possible. Standard 18-inch wheels come standard. Sizes up to 22 inches are available. All-terrain and Mud-terrain tires are also available. There are however no 21-inch options.
Land Rover is taking steps to dispel any concerns that the new Defender will not live up to its legendary off-road capabilities. The Defender was tested in Dubai earlier this month. The company stated that it had covered more than 1.2 million km (or 745,000 miles) in testing. Top Gear also said that Land Rover did a “whole vehicle test” which simulates 10 years of use or 150,000 miles. It can run for up to eight weeks, 24 hours per day. Land Rover seems to be determined to live up the Defender’s name.
