BMW M8 Competition Faces the Harrowing Green Hell

Big Bimmers can get down.

The Nurburgring Nordschleife racetrack is one of the most dangerous in the world. It has over 150 corners, and more than 12 miles (19 km) of asphalt that runs through the German forest. Jackie Stewart, Formula 1’s ace, called it the “Green Hell”. It is a great place for automakers and individuals to push their cars to the limits.

Sport Auto’s Christian Gebhardt drove the BMW Competition around the track in order to see its potential. The M8 road car is a very successful racing car. The BMW M8 GTE racecar achieved great success in IMSA GTLM series. It is not an accident that the M8 road car won two consecutive class wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona. The BMW M8 , along with its racing heritage, is the most powerful and expensive BMW currently on sale.

The lap is composed in key areas like the Flugplatz, both the Karussell as well as the Kleines Karussell. The vehicle’s all-wheel drive system seems to do a good job managing its weight through low speed corners. The 616-horsepower (459 kilowatts) twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V8 engine provides plenty of power for critical sections such as the uphill climb after Breidsheid corner. This combination of power, control and speed made the BMW M8 one of the fastest BMWs to the Nordschleife in 7 minutes 32.

If BMW wanted to establish an official lap time, they would most likely hire a factory driver to get a better result. Gebhardt is still an excellent driver behind the wheel. A lap around the Nurburgring in full-chat is a feat in and of itself.
