This could be a comment about rumors, specific GM plans or an electric ‘Vette which already went over 200.
America will elect its next president in the latter part of this year, in case you didn’t know. The Democratic nomination is expected to be accepted by Joe Biden, the former Vice President. This brings us to this campaign video that shows him and his 1967 Corvette Stingray. We are not concerned about the classic “Vette” or his campaign message. It’s actually his mention of a future EV Corvette that can go 200 mph. Wait, what?
Biden said that “they tell me” (and I’m eager to see if it’s true) that an electric Corvette can travel 200 mph. This is a broad statement and could be taken to mean any of three things. It could be that a GM executive had mentioned a fully-electric super Corvette to him. There is plenty of evidence that supports electrification. Not least Leaked information on the Corvette Zora and trademark applications to E-Ray. This certainly sounds like an electric Corvette.
But there is another scenario. Biden’s statement that “they tell me” is extremely vague and could be referring to news organizations like us, which have consistently reported on C8 developments. Motor1.com’s archive contains numerous articles about the Zora with a hybrid powertrain that includes all-wheel drive and over 1,000 horsepower. Although it is not an electric vehicle, Biden could have simply said that the Zora uses electric power in some form. It would be a hybrid, and the Zora is currently one of the most secretive Detroit automakers.
Another option is also available that many people overlook. Biden may not be referring to GM or Chevrolet, but the Genovation. The company converts Corvettes into full-on electric vehicles and sent an electric Corvette to 200 mph in 2017. They also converted a C7 to an electric Corvette and reached 210 mph. So technically, a 200-mph Corvette is already. Genovation still accepts reservations, so you can’t purchase one.
Whether it’s a little bit of inside information on GM, a nod at the Genovation GXE or a politician reciting rumors he hears, electrification is certain in the Corvette’s future.
