You can drive up to 62 miles on the WLTP cycle.
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class was released earlier today. It featured the S500, S580 and S580 models with mild-hybrid powertrains that feature EQ Boost technology. Mercedes-Benz already revealed the third option for the new S-Class range: the plug-in Hybrid.
The plug-in hybrid S-Class, also known as the S580e uses the same turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder inline gas engine that powers the base S500 model. It adds an electric motor mounted in the gearbox and a 28-kilowatt battery pack to give it a total output of 510 horsepower (380 megawatts). This is an increase of 81 horses (60kW) over S500 and 41 (31kW) more than standard S580.
The S580e, however, is all about electric range – the European WLTP cycle shows that the plug-in S-Class can drive up to 62 mph (100 km) using just battery power. This is more than twice the range of the S650e using the same WLTP scale. The new S580e battery pack is twice as large as the one in the S650e, at 28.0 kWh and 13.5 kWh respectively. This new range is to be expected.
The Mercedes-Benz S580e will be available in Europe for now. The plug-in S-Class is expected to make its way to America in the near future. Our best guess is that it will arrive there sometime next year. The S580e won’t be able to continue the 62-mile range of the European model; the EPA scale could show that this range drop to 20-30 percent.
The S500 and S580 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models will be available in the US as soon as 2021. The base S500 model gets a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces 429 horsepower (320 kW), and 384 poundfeet (521 Newton meters), while the S580 model, which produces 469 horsepower (350 kW) as well as 516 lb.ft (700 Nm), has a twin-turbocharged eight-cylinder V8. The pricing details for these two models will be available closer the date of their on-sale.
