Toyota Offers Android Auto in Select Vehicles

Apple CarPlay was just introduced in the 2019 Avalon.

Modern vehicles are full of technology, in case you didn’t know. The Android auto is a popular item that Toyota has not included in its lineup. Despite the fact that almost every other competitor offers this feature on their basic models, Toyota has not been able to provide compatibility for this smartphone system. This is about to change.

Android has announced that Android Auto is compatible with certain Toyota models. It’s currently limited to select Toyota models, including the 4Runner and Sequoia. The Tacoma and Tundra will be compatible with Android Auto in 2020. The system is also available in Europe for the Aygo city vehicle starting in 2018 and the Yaris beginning with 2019. Last year Toyota stated that Apple CarPlay will be available in the 2019 Avalon. At this moment, there is no information on whether Toyota vehicles will be available for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

This isn’t to say that Toyota hasn’t had any in-car tech. Entune, the manufacturer’s in-house system for managing its infotainment suite, was developed. The system was compatible with some Android and Apple apps, but the actual programming behind it was all Linux. According to tech website Verge Toyota was worried about Android’s security and was wary of hackers getting access. However, this didn’t stop other automakers installing the package in a variety of vehicles.

Toyota’s concerns are not unfounded, however. Hackers could find ways to hack into autonomous vehicles and technology that is increasing. Some years ago, some hackers made a video showing how a Jeep Grand Cherokee was remotely hacked. The links below show that remote hacking of vehicles are something being seriously considered.
