If you want to stretch your legs, there is more space in the back.
It was known for some time that the S90 would get a longer wheelbase variant, but it is a pleasant surprise to learn that Volvo plans to export it beyond China’s borders. The model will officially be unveiled in the People’s Republic, where it will be produced. The Geely-owned marque plans to export the stretched sedan to Europe and the United States. However, it is not yet known when Volvo might start to do so.
The S90L will be the fifth Volvo model built in China. It will be joined by the S60 sedan, which is currently being assembled at the factory in Chengdu. The XC Classic, also known as the previous-gen XC90, has been rebranded and is still being produced at Daqing. Before being discontinued, the S80L was also made in China.
The S90L, Volvo’s next model, will be the second Volvo to be exported from China. This model is also available in the USA as the S60Inscription. It has a longer wheelbase that provides extra legroom for the rear, measuring 3.4 inches (8.6 cm) more than the regular S60.
Volvo has not yet stated how far it would like to extend the S90L’s wheelbase beyond its 115.8 inch (2.94 meters) limit. The photo shows the rear legroom for an regular model that we took on a spin last week. To maximize rear legroom, the Swedes may decide to move back the back seats a few inches.
Although the Guangzhou Auto Show in November 2016 seems the ideal venue for the larger S90, Volvo has yet to confirm whether the car will be on display.
