The reports about the Ford Mondeo’s demise are exaggerated. Blue Oval has just announced that the fourth-gen Mondial will be available on the Old continent for at least one more model year.
The 1.5-liter EcoBoost turbo gasoline engine, which was subject to stricter European emission standards, will no longer be offered for the Mondeo. With the model’s facelift, the 2.0 EcoBoost was removed. Now the more economical option is available.

The same system is used to power the Mondeo Hybrid as the Fusion Hybrid. It is powered by a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle naturally aspirated gas engine. A small 1.4-kWh lithium battery pack and an electrical motor support it. Peak system output is rated as 187 horsepower (139 Kilowatts).

The brand new Mondeo will be available at some point in the second half of next year. The project codenamed CD542 will be worldwide and take the form of a rugged, plug-in hybrid wagon. It will also be made available in the United States as an Outback competitor.
