Convertibles, as well as roadsters, might also be in the pipeline.

BMW and Toyota already share a close relationship. This includes sharing a platform for the Z4/ Supra. The boss of the German automaker is keen to expand the partnership. According to Automotive News Europe, Oliver Zipse, BMW CEO, stated that “in the next decades we would do well to reinforce bonds.”

Zipse is open for further expansion of the partnership between the two automakers. The current collaboration runs through 2025. He believes that having an ally in expanding fuel cell vehicles is essential to encourage policymakers to adopt this technology.

Toyota is a great partner in this fuel-cell support, as it’s one the few brands that really takes this technology seriously. The company, for example, is following up on the Mirai model with a second-generation version.

The new sedan has a more traditional exterior design, and switches to rear-wheel drive. The powertrain produces around 30 horsepower (22kilowatts) less than the previous one. This puts the output at 182 HP (136 kW). According to Japan’s tests, the range is around 528 miles (850 km).

Zipse also spoke out about BMW’s huge lineup and his desire for a simplified range. According to Automotive News Europe, Zipse stated that “Coupes convertibles and roadsters will be left”, according to Zipse.

It is possible that products from the 2, 4 and 8 Series lineups could be affected in the future. BMW continues to expand its cross-platform range, which includes the X1 and the X7. The newly revealed iX EV is also available (gallery).
