It will be available for a demonstration run at the Porsche Winter Event.
The Porsche lineup of SUVs and sports cars that has maintained its rich heritage of performance are the first thing that comes to mind when you hear it. First, you’d think of the 911, then the Panamera and the Macan.
Porsche isn’t just known for its highly-respected sports cars. The German sportscar-maker is not well-known, but it has had its share of success in rallying. The Porsche 959 and the Porsche 953 won the Dakar Rally overall victory in 1986. It is true that the 911 won the Dakar Rally in 1986 with the Porsche 959 and 953.
Porsche plans to get back to rallying, and the car it has in mind might be the right one. The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport is a rear-engined sports car that was developed by Weissach, the motorsport division of the German automaker. It conforms to the FIA R-GT regulations. It will compete in 2020’s FIA R-GT Cup.
The positive reaction to the launch of the Cayman GT4 Clubsport Rally Concept Car, which was secretly unveiled last year, was a major factor in Porsche’s decision not to return to rallying.
The future Porsche rally car, however, will not be based upon the Cayman GT4 Clubsport. Instead, it will be based off the 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport which was first seen at the track in January. This means that the future rally car will likely be powered with a 3.8-liter flat six engine producing 425 horsepower.
A demo run on snow or ice on Porsche Winter Event will take place before the GP Ice Race in Zellam See on January 19-20 to spark Porsche’s return back to rallying. Richard Lietz will pilot the concept car.
