The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R won’t be available in the United States until third quarter 2021. However, Europeans can get their hands on the hot hatchback. The driver can test drive the car on the autobahn at night to push it beyond its factory-stated top speed.
The driver begins with a short, unnarrated tour through the new Golf R. The hot hatch accelerates quickly to speeds that will guarantee a trip to jail on an American Interstate.
Traffic is light and the driver can accelerate when the road ahead is clear. The speedometer finally displays 263 km/h (163 miles/h). VW claims that the Golf R’s top speed is 155 mph (250 km/h).
The driver leaves the autobahn and finds an empty section on the road. He/she performs a 0-100 km/h acceleration test (62 mph). The Golf R can reach that speed in just 4.5 seconds on the wet road. This is faster than the factory claimed at 4.7 seconds to reach 60 mph (96 km/h).
The 2022 Golf R is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder engine that produces 315 horsepower (235kilowatts), and 310 pound feet (420 newton meters) of torque. Customers have the option of a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DSG. This hot hatch’s Drift Mode setting allows the rear differential to send 100 percent of the torque directly to one corner.
VW has not yet revealed the price of the 2022 Golf R in the US. The 2019 model was priced at $40,395.
