Master of his trade, looking at the best of the crop.

Although opinions about the McLaren Senna’s aesthetic are sometimes disputed, no one would dare to criticize the P1. Frank Stephenson, the McLaren Senna’s designer, was able to attend the 2020 Hampton Court Palace Concours of Elegance with Jodie Kidd. He also analyzes the styling and appearance of some of the outstanding automobiles displayed.

Stephenson was a firm believer in beauty following function and so it was no surprise that he wanted to see the Lotus Evija up close. The electric hypercar’s body conceals a carbon fiber monocoque that is attached to the vehicle’s survival cell. This makes it extremely light and strong.

The vehicle does not have exterior mirrors or handles to cut through the air. The Lotus is beautiful and fast thanks to its large venturi tunnels. This is possible due to its electric powertrain. The rear end, as is almost standard with current hypercars has an active wing/diffuser to provide optimal performance. It is refreshing to see that the Evija, despite being complex, still adheres to Lotus’ legendary F1 Engineer Colin Chapman’s philosophy of lightweight performance.

Stephenson liked the next car, the – which was actually closer to the Evija’s principle than you might think. Stephenson’s voluptuous front fenders look great and allow for more rubber to contact the road. The front headlights tell a similar story. They are elegant and aerodynamic while still being stylish.

Stephenson was also drawn to the proportions of the design. The driver’s position is just in front the rear wheels. This gives Stephenson enough space for a V12 and allows him to connect the car’s body lines. It was the 250 GTO that he favored, but it is clear that this event should be on everyone’s bucket list.
