2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata gets new standard tech, price bump

It will be on sale next month.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata has been the most-sold two-seater sports car worldwide and Mazda hopes to continue that feat in 2020. Mazda is updating its Miata to do this, but it is not a complete mid-cycle refresh. These subtle updates should please new customers.

2020 brings new i-Activsense safety features, including blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, smart-city brake support, lane departure warning system, and smart-city brake support. These features are now standard on entry-level Sport trims. This model also features an updated Mazda badge, new fonts, and a brand-new key fob design.

For the first time, the Club trim will offer both Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto. Manual-equipped Club models will receive a limited slip differential, Bilstein dampers and a front shock tower brace. This trim will also get the Sport’s slew new iActivsense safety features. It will also have a nine-speaker Bose sound system and LED daytime running lamps.

The Grand Touring trim uses the Bilstein dampers and front shock tower brace as well as the limited-slip differential and Bilstein dampers. However, the manual six-speed transmission is still required. The Grand Touring trim has all the benefits of the Grand Touring trim, but with the added sportiness of Club enhancements.

Mazda’s Skyactiv G 2.0-liter engine, which produces the same 181 horsepower (135 Kilowatts), and 151 poundfeet (205 Newton-meters), of torque for 2020, is one thing that will remain the same. You can choose between a six speed manual gearbox and a six speed automatic with paddle shifters.

The 2020 Miata will also see a price hike. For the entry-level Sport trim, the price will be $26,580 with the manual gearbox. The 2019 model will be $25,730. This does not include the $920 destination fee ($965 Alaskan). The automatic adds $1350 to the price, making it $27,930

The gap between manual and auto shrinks when you use the Club trim, which costs $30,290 and $308,890 respectively. The RF Club is available at $33,045. The automatic is $600 more. Brembo / BBS Recaro packages are $4,470 for soft tops and $4,670 RF. However, it is only available with the six speed manual.

The Grand Touring trim is also more expensive. The 2019 model is priced at $30,780. However, the price rises to $31,670 in 2020 for the manual-equipped version. The new starting price for an automatic model is $32,195. The RF Grand Touring models are priced at $34,425 manual and $34,750 automatic. Red Nappa leather can be added to both the soft-top and RF Grand Touring models for $300.

Next month, the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata will be available at Mazda dealerships.
