Acura cannot hide what lies beneath the body.
Acura has made an impressive effort to hide a prototype SUV for sporty purposes with this heavily disguised test mule.
MDX Type S Although it is impossible to tell if the vehicle is a performance-oriented or not from its body, our spy can take a few photos underneath to show the dual exhaust system.
Acura covers the test mule so well that it’s nearly impossible to identify that it is a company product. Even the standard LED headlights on the SUV are replaced by placeholder pieces that feature big amber turn lights.
It also hides the interior and ensures that no emblems are visible. The model is identified by the design of the vents in the center stack and the position of the engine start button lower down on the console.
These photos under the SUV reveal something about the MDX. The engine’s exhaust pipes are two-piece and suggest a V-shaped cylinder layout. Each corner has a pair outlets.
Acura announced in January 2018 that it would be reviving its Type S badge to promote future performance models. Acura-branded vehicles were the only ones that had this powerplant. According to the automaker, Type S models would not be too sporty and will be similar in style to Audi’s S-branded products.
Spy photos in 2018 showed Acura testing a camouflaged TLX, which we thought might be the Type S. But there aren’t any recent photos.
