Mercedes calls it “dream cars” and this well-thought-out facelift is for them.
The S-Class Coupe Coupe and Cabriolet are expected to be discontinued, but their segment-mates from the lower end of the market have received a mid-cycle upgrade. The EClass Coupe, and Cabriolet were unveiled earlier this week. They get the same visual updates as the sedans and estate body styles that were revealed back in March. These videos show the coupe in E53 flavor as well as the droptop in a Benz specification.
We have the opportunity to hear directly from the people behind these cars about the changes made for the 2021 model-year. The obvious changes include completely new headlights, both for the body styles. The AMG E53 gets the Panamericana grille featuring vertical slats to give it a more aggressive front. The more sporty of the two cars has a prominent front pron, which has undergone some changes in comparison to the original E53 Coupe that was introduced two and a quarter years ago.
The fixed roof model is now available in a new color called “Graphite gray” and comes on optional 20-inch aero-optimized black wheels with five double-spoke designs. Red brake calipers contrast with the black wheels. The coupe’s rear has not changed much. However, the shape of the taillights was retained from the prefacelift model with slightly revised graphics.
The cabriolet E-Class comes in the sporty-looking AMG Line version with the so-called “diamond grille” and a reworked apron. The coupe’s slightly updated taillights are visible on the cabrio. This car is a new color, “Patagonia Red”, and rides on new wheels that were introduced with the facelift.
The most notable feature of the cabin is Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment systems. There are two 10.25-inch screens standard, and two 12.3-inch screens available for an additional charge. The interior of the AMG E53 is sportier, but the Benz cabrio is luxurious. This model features a brand new, open-pore grey oak wood that was introduced to the car’s renovation.
As Mercedes has not yet announced the availability of E63 versions, don’t expect to see a V8 under these cars. Although plug-in hybrid powertrains for these cars are not in the plans, mild-hybrid technology is available throughout the range, even for diesel engines.
