Drone footage shows the extent of damage.
California’s Highway 1 is the route that offers the most breathtaking views on the roads. It’s also known as the Pacific Coast Highway. This highway is a famous American thoroughfare that affords motorists breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean while they drive.
If you are thinking of taking a trip to this area of the country for a therapy, it might be a good idea to reconsider. Highway 1 suffered significant damage from torrential rains and was washed into the ocean.
The Caltrans has released drone footage of the damaged section of Highway 62. The washout that took almost all of the road and destroyed the entire pathway occurred just south of Big Sur. It caused the route to be closed until further notice.
Caltrans says that Big Sur is still accessible and open from the north. The detour from Ragged Point to Big Sur is not ideal as it turns a 45-mile drive into an almost 200-mile one, according to a Reddit user.
This wrath isn’t new to Highway 1. The road’s cliffside location makes it vulnerable to damage from heavy rains and typhoons. This could cause the route to be closed completely or partially. People living in the vicinity know this well, and it could be a reason to think about the future for the famous thoroughfare many decades later.
A significant section of Highway 1 was shut down in 2017 after Mud Creek’s steep slopes collapsed. The road was closed for more than a year. Caltrans recommends that you first check its QuickMap before travelling within the area. This will help to minimize inconveniences.
