Despite obvious adverse effects from the coronavirus pandemic has been dominant the past year. The Japanese marque has regained its title of the most-sold car brand in 2020 after losing it to Volkswagen Group five years back.
Compare the Market’s analysis included search results data from 158 different countries in 2018, 2019, and 2020. In 2020, the total volume of searches for car brands was approximately 88 million.
The study found that Toyota ranked at the top in 55 countries. This represents 34.8 percent of all countries. This is a significant improvement over the 2019 study, where Toyota was only top-searched for in 17.7 per cent of countries.
BMW saw a drastic drop from its former pedestal. It went from being the most-searched brand in 118 countries in 2019, to 34 in 2020. This represents a 64% decrease. The German marque retained its position as the most-searched carmaker over the three-year period. It accounted for 38.3% of all top searches, compared to Toyota’s 31.3%.
Mercedes-Benz has remained the third most-searched carmaker in 158 countries. Interestingly, Ford and Kia ranked higher in the study. They ranked 4th and 5th, respectively, just below Mercedes-Benz. Each brand of car was at the bottom in 2019, appearing in only one country.
