At the Easter Jeep Safari, the battery-powered Wrangler is going to be in Moab.
Jeep has made big strides towards electrification. The Wrangler plug in hybrid is already a reality. A 4xe version of the new Grand Cherokee is also on the horizon. This is all paving the way to Jeep’s first fully-electric production vehicle. And it may arrive sooner than you think. A Wrangler EV concept is just a month away.
Jeep’s Super Bowl LV commercial likely featured a shout-out for a new Jeep website, The Way Ahead. It guides visitors through some of Jeep’s future plans, including the launch the Grand Wagoneer and autonomous driving tech. Hidden among the information boxes was the Wrangler.
The Wrangler BEV concept is simply called it. A short video shows a Wrangler body in silhouette and an electric powertrain cutaway (below). The concept vehicle will not be revealed beyond the fact that it will be part Jeep’s concept lineup at its annual Easter Jeep Safari in Moab. It will run from March 28 to April 3 in 2021.
This zoomed-in image gives us a glimpse of what lies beneath the electric Wrangler. The electric Wrangler appears to have multiple battery packs attached to the front of an electric motor, which sends power through a conventional-looking transmission and transfer box. This is a very different approach than other electric vehicles with multiple motors to provide four-wheel drive capability. This concept combines traditional off-road technology and electric propulsion. It might appeal to four-wheeling enthusiasts who aren’t sure how electric power works in these applications.
The possibility of a production version is perhaps of greater interest. Jeep presented the Wrangler 4xe hybrid concept back in January 2020, and then followed up with a production version in September. A fully electric Wrangler concept could be shown in March, which could indicate that a production Wrangler Electric might be available before the end.
