We’ve seen amphibious vehicles featured on this site time and again and we are always amazed. We are not surprised by the latest Highland Systems amphibious vehicle, but this one makes us feel more than awe.
The Storm was introduced by Highland Systems, a Ukrainian company, at the IREX defense expo Abu Dhabi. It is a multi-purpose, heavily armored military tanks. Although it is amphibious as previously mentioned, it offers more than just moving in the water and onto the dirt.
The Storm is powered by a long-range hybrid powertrain. It can run in hybrid mode for 18 to 36 hours with the diesel range extender. It can also operate in full-electric mode for up to 3 hours depending on vehicle speed.
The hybrid system can produce up to 2,500 horsepower (no torque figures), pulling 17,600 pounds (8,000 kg) of weight. Storm can reach speeds of up to 87 mph (140 km/h) on land and 18.6 mph (30km/h) on water. The Storm can handle waves up to 60 inches (1.25 meters) high.
The Storm has armor that protects against mines and ballistics. It also offers protection against IEDs upto STANAG level 1. The tank can also be controlled remotely via a remote control function. Imagine a unmanned version.
The Storm is still in prototype form at the time of writing. Development and testing will continue moving forward. The Storm is also being developed in a submersible form. This makes it a combination of a tank, boat and submarine.
