Next-Gen Audi RS3 Makes Spy Photo Debut At Nurburgring

This is an early prototype mule for the hot hatch.

It was only a matter time before we saw a test car of the range-topping RS3 performing initial evaluations. Our spies captured this early prototype hot hatch while it was being lapped at the Nurburgring.

It is interesting that while the first sightings were made with heavily camouflaged test cars, the new HTML3/ vehicle actually has the same body as the current model. The side shots show the wide wheel arches that house super-low-profile tires. This suggests a slightly wider track than the RS3 currently on sale.

Unfortunately, this is all we can learn about the new RS3 from the attached photos. The exhaust layout is vastly different from the A3/S3 prototypes. It features two large oval pipes. We are encouraged by this mule’s high-speed testing and encourage us to expect more spy shots in the near future.

According to the rumours, the new RS3 will be able to replace the 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged engine. This will allow for a little more power (approximately 400 horsepower) than the current RS3. A new exhaust gas filtration system will make this hot hatch cleaner and allow it to comply with the latest European emissions standards.

The redesign of the A3 range will be launched later in the year, when the regular hatchback will debut. The launch of the overhauled A3 range will likely take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Sales are expected to begin before the end 2019. The A3 will be followed shortly by the S3 in 2020. The RS3 is expected to arrive towards the end next year.
