Nissan's Infiniti FX To Revolutionize Hybrids

This hybrid system allows for an electric motor to assist a gasoline engine at higher speeds.

According to a report on Dutch website autoblog, the new Infiniti FX SUV will feature a new type of hybrid train. The new hybrid system allows for an electric motor to be used as an assist to a gasoline engine at higher speeds. This will result in fuel savings for rural, suburban, or urban buyers due to the increased mileage on highways and streets.

Hybrid powertrains typically use an electric motor for low speeds and initial acceleration. This allows for fuel savings, mainly in cities and stop-and go traffic. This capability will be available in the Infiniti FX Hybrid, along with the high speed electric motor.

The new hybrid will not be available to FX owners until 2011 or later. The 2009 Infiniti FX is available with either a V6 gasoline engine or a V8 gasoline engine. A Renault-built V6 diesel will also be available in 2010.
