Alfa Romeo GTV and 8C have reportedly been cancelled

Tonale will be coming, but the revivals of the two sports cars have been put on hold.

Automobile Magazine has published a disturbing report that suggests Alfa Romeo’s promise of a duo sports cars is dead upon arrival. The 8C and GTV were first announced by Alfa Romeo in June 2018, when they presented their product roadmap for 2022.

According to the article Alfa Romeo will “see its wings cut,” with FCA CEO Mike Manley stating during yesterday’s earnings conference that the brand’s new portfolio would be significantly reduced with corresponding capital expenditure reductions. Both the 8C (and GTV) are on the verge of collapse.

We were able to locate an updated version of our roadmap by digging deep into FCA’s Q3 2019 results document. The Giulia, Stelvio have their mid-cycle facelifts. However, it does not include the long-wheelbase variant that was promised in June 2017. In 2021, the sedan and SUV will be in production.

Two other products are crossovers. One of them is a production version Tonale. The compact crossover will arrive on the assembly line next year with a plug in hybrid powertrain. A smaller, more comfortable model with pure electric is expected to follow in 2022.

This is a comparison of the two product roadmaps that FCA published regarding Alfa Romeo’s future. It shows what has changed since the original slideshow presentation in June 2018.

Another change is that Giulietta has been removed from the revised plan. The original plan was to give the hatchback a facelift by 2020. However, it seems that the hatchback will be following the path of the MiTo. The latter could transform into a B-segment crossover, as Alfa Romeo suggests that the three-door supermini could become a crossover with rear door slots below the MiTo.

FCA states that Alfa Romeo’s portfolio plan will be “rationalized” in order to “focus on market strengths with reduced global reach, overlap with other Group brands.” It also says that capital spending will be decreased.

Last note: The conference on Q3 2019 results took place the same day Groupe PSA & FCA announced plans for a 50/50 merger, which will create the fourth-largest automaker in the world.Motor1.com contacted FCA for clarification. Once we receive a response, we will update the article.
