Strange things can happen when a tire exceeds its maximum speed.
This is the most bizarre method of tire torture that you will ever see. We have two Ladas to test this out, and if you see them, it’s because they were welded together recently to make , a bizarre widebody monster. Although they are now separated, you can bolt a solid rear axle onto a other rear axle and the differential input shaft will spin much faster than the axle. Why not attach a tire? But there’s more.
Although it might seem like such a test is best suited to a high-performance street tire, Garage 54 does not roll that way. The test subject is instead a Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8, a snow tire with a maximum speed rating just 118 mph. It’s also a studded snowtire… with the studs still in position. This video does not contain any blood or other similar violence, but it is a studded snow tire.
This should be obvious as the tire accelerates to more than 5,600 revolutions per hour. The tire’s maximum speed of 118 mph is approximately 1,800 rpm. Quick math shows that this tire traveled at around 385 mph. This is more than three times the tire’s maximum rating and enough to literally stretch and break the steel belts. Although the tire does not disintegrate, a post-experiment inspection shows that its days are over.
This means that the tire will likely be returned to Garage 54 for future experiments. Let’s just hope that they remove the studs.
