According to Mopar insiders, some Jeep Wrangler trims will soon have an option for a Gorilla Glass windshield. Motor1.com reached out to Jeep to confirm this information.
The outer sections of the new windshield have a Gorilla Glass inner ply and are 52 percent thicker that the standard. The result is a window that is three times stronger against cracks and chips. The windshields on both models are designed with an upright angle so that they don’t catch rocks. This is a major problem for these models, which are often driven off-road by their owners. Mopar Insiders states that the Gorilla Glass windshield is available for just $95 It’s difficult to imagine anyone skipping this upgrade considering the price. Jeep claims that 80 percent of customers will choose the stronger glass.
The Gorilla Glass windshield will not be available on lower grade models. The Wrangler will have it available on the Sahara, Rubicon 392, Sahara4xe and Rubicon 4xe. This upgrade will be available on Gladiator models: Overland, Rubicon and Mojave. Gorilla Glass is used in automotive applications by many other companies, including Jeep. Ford teamed up with Corning, the manufacturer of the material, to develop a hybrid version of the GT supercar’s engine covers. It was 30% lighter than conventional glass and 25% to 50% thinner than traditional glass, while maintaining the same or higher strength. 2019 saw the introduction of a Gorilla Glass windshield by Hyperformance for the F-150. It cost $899.95 and was backed by a 2-year warranty.
